Toronto Courtyard house
Project Type: Case study/House analysis
Architect: Studio Junction
Year: Fall 2016
Designed and built by Peter Tan and Christine Ho Ping Kong, of Studio Junction, the Toronto Courtyard house was converted from an old contractor’s warehouse into a lane-way house for their family of 4. The house is situated in a surprising urban landscape, being at the corner of two alleyways. The house is walled in, with only windows facing inwards, so that despite looking dull and dark from the outside, the house is actually filled with light in every corner. The two courtyards serve as light sources in many ways and have different programmatic and spatial values (one formal and one intimate) that also create a sequence of long vistas which expand the volume of the house perceptually.
